Editorial standards

The language of a story must not be stronger than its evidence.

1. Primary sources

Material claims are traced to an original document, complete recording or directly attributable statement whenever reasonably available.

2. Headlines and urgency

Headlines must reflect the article. Scarcity, countdowns and relative time phrases are treated as claims, not proof.

3. Images and captions

Captions separate visible details from identification and interpretation. Supplied images are not presented as documentary proof of a named event.

4. Independence

The publication does not accept payment in exchange for a conclusion. Relevant conflicts should be disclosed or the assignment declined.

5. Fairness and response

People or organizations facing a serious factual criticism should receive a meaningful opportunity to respond.

6. Uncertainty

Missing dates, sources and scope are stated near the relevant claim. Editors do not quietly fill gaps with assumptions.
